Coloured Canyon
The Coloured Canyon presents one of the most magnificent rock formations in the world which are an incomparable attraction: they vary from sandstone to limestone, granite and veins of basalt dominate the scenery through the entire hike. The road to the Coloured Canyon snakes nicely through magnificent mountains and bold, rugged rock-formations of awe-inspiring beauty.
Whilst walking through the 800m long Canyon it’s apparent that you’re in the midst of a geological wonderland. At some places, the rocks radiate crystalline colours, at others they have a smooth velvety appearance. Except for one or two obstacles, it’s a fairly easy hike. For example, at one point, you have to slide down through a vent, where the two sides of the canyon almost touch each other and where maybe thousands of years ago, a fallen boulder had blocked the way, leaving a narrow opening underneath. On the other side of this obstacle, the canyon floor gradually starts to rise again. A few minutes later, another obstacle appears where the best way to handle is to swing yourself around a huge rock to slide two meters down, or simply to jump over it.
This excursion leaves Dahab by minibus in the early morning to catch the best light for the walk through the canyon. Travel takes approximately one and a half hours each way, with the last half an hour off-road, venturing into the mountains. There’s plenty of time to stop and rest along the walk with Bedouin tea offered by locals. Please bring good fitting footwear, enough water and some snacks/lunch with you.
We recommend combining this trip with a visit to Castle Zaman nearby. After the walk you can relax at the pool and sauna or have a massage before a delicious dinner in one of the most stunning locations the Sinai has to offer.

White Canyon & Ein Khudra
Slightly smaller than The Coloured Canyon, the White Canyon forges through the high plains of St. Catherine’s National Park. Sandstone and limestone combine to give the walls and fine sandy floora brilliant white colour. After arriving by jeep in the middle of desert between St. Catherine’s and Nuweiba there is a twenty minute walk across a stunning plain with towering wind shaped boulders before reaching the canyon.
Descending into the canyon by ladder it’s an easy stroll through the scenic cliffs. After around an houra picture perfect desert oasis can be seen in the next valley. Its name, Ein Khudra (Green Oasis), perfectly describes this eruption of life where gushing fresh water springs nourish date palm gardens in the seemingly barren desert. It’s the perfect place to take five with the locals, drink Bedouin tea and enjoy some well deserved lunch before ascending from the deep desert valley to the plain again via another route.
This excursion also leaves Dahab by minibus in the early morning to catch the best light for the walk through the canyon. Travel takes approximately one hour each way. Please bring good fitting footwear, enough water and some snacks/lunch with you.

St. Katherine
The town of St. Katherine is located at the food of the Mt. Sinai, around 1600 meters above sea level. It is the oldest continuously inhabited monastery in the World and its library has the largest religious collection next to the Vatican only. It was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, although there was already a church at the site of the Burning Bush erected by the Empress Helena in 330 AD. Byzantine Orthodox monasticism has even earlier roots, and the area is sacred to all three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The monastery was under the protection of the Prophet Mohammed, Arab and Turkish leaders and Napoleon, which helped to preserve it virtually undamaged.
The Monastery is open Monday to Thursday and on Saturday between 10 am and 11.30 am. Please be appropriately dressed.
We recommend visiting St. Katherine in combination with climbing Mt. Sinai!

Mt. Sinai
Called Mt. Horeb in the Bible and locally known as Jebel Musa, Mt. Sinai is considered to be the place where Prophet Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. It is one of the highest mountains in Egypt, with a small Orthodox church and a mosque on its summit at 2285 meters from sea level. Mt Sinai forms one massif with Jebel Safsafa and Jebel Loza, with many small basins on the top. In these basins there are old churches, small gardens and relics of monastic life. The most common route to the peak is from the Monastery via the “Steps of Repentance” built by monks or via the camel path built by Viceroy of Egypt.
We recommend watching the beautiful sunrise from the top of Mt. Sinai or to combine this trip with a yoga class at 2285 meters!
